Context  

Chewton Glen is a luxury country house hotel and spa set in 130 acres of Hampshire countryside on the edge of the New Forest National Park, and a member of the prestigious Relais & Châteaux group. As a five-star destination built around an unspoilt, relaxing guest experience, Chewton Glen required an electrical testing partner who understood that compliance work in this kind of environment demands as much discretion and care as it does technical competence. 

Intersafe, part of Complii has carried out fixed wire testing for Chewton Glen since 2015, with the relationship now spanning a decade. The scope has grown to include a full Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) covering nearly 2,000 circuits across the croquet wing, spa, tennis centre, and lodge, making it one of the more extensive and varied testing programmes Intersafe delivers within the hospitality sector. 

Challenge 

Delivering electrical testing across a luxury hotel and spa estate brings a distinct set of demands, shaped as much by guest experience as by technical scope: 

  • Protecting the guest experience at all costs: As a five-star destination, Chewton Glen's entire offering is built around an unspoilt and relaxing environment for guests. Any testing or compliance work needed to be carried out without any perceptible disturbance to the experience guests had come to expect. 

  • A large and varied estate to test: With nearly 2,000 circuits spread across the croquet wing, spa, tennis centre, and lodge, the EICR programme required careful planning to cover a genuinely diverse range of buildings and facilities, each with its own access and operational considerations. 

  • Confidentiality and discretion as a baseline expectation: Chewton Glen's status as a high-profile destination meant that confidentiality and discretion were treated as fundamental requirements throughout, not simply good practice. 

Solution 

Intersafe, part of Complii, took a genuinely bespoke approach to the Chewton Glen relationship from the outset, building it around the hotel's needs rather than fitting the hotel around a standard process: 

  • A consultative start that built early confidence: The initial meeting with Intersafe's Business Development Manager gave Chewton Glen's Maintenance Manager early confidence that Intersafe understood the requirement and were committed to delivering a genuinely tailored solution, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. 

  • Overnight working in sensitive areas, at no extra cost: Intersafe carried out testing in areas such as the spa overnight, ensuring guest experience was completely unaffected, and did so without any additional charge, reflecting a genuine understanding of what the hotel needed rather than a transactional approach to scope. 

  • Pre-project planning built around the site: Meetings ahead of works commencing allowed Intersafe to work closely with the Maintenance Manager to fully understand the site, its operational needs, and its sensitivities. Clear, consistent communication continued throughout the project, keeping the hotel informed of progress at every stage.

  • Fully accredited, in-house qualified engineers: All testing was carried out by experienced, qualified engineers employed directly by Intersafe, supported by NICEIC approval and accreditation from SAFE, CHAS, and ISO, giving Chewton Glen full confidence in the credentials and quality standing behind every visit.
